He was always insulted but he was just a dramatic as us. Certainly a matched set. I've known him my entire life. He was a cradle cavalier.

Could you tell me what that means?
Were you raised together, alongside your sister?

Babs was from a branch family, a prince in his own right. He was selected to be a Cavalier- a necromancer's sworn sword- when he was born. He probably had the blood on his lips before he left the cradle.

When my sister and I were born, he was placed to be our cavalier. When he wasn't training or at lessons, he was by our sides. He wasn't formally assigned to us until we were twelve, he was fourteen, and that's when we took our oaths. One Flesh, One End.

He was an excellent Cavalier and fulfilled his role perfectly.

What does it mean, One Flesh, One End?

It means our lives are tied together. An adept/cavalier pair are a singular unit. Socially. Martially.

We've nothing like it in Ravka. Tamar and Tolya would die for me, as I would for them, but we've taken no vows.

Thank you. He fulfilled his duty. I still feel his presence to this day.

Grisha don't seem to suffer from the physical frailties adepts do. Necromancy takes a toll on the body. If you ever met my sister, you'd understand as we are identical twins, but few would believe it at first.

Should I wish to meet your sister?
Will she dislike me as much as the Void seems to think she will?

My sister is gorgeous. She's incredibly charming and knows how to get what she wants. And that's attention.

Give her what she wants and you'd get along just fine. Though I doubt you'd find her intellectually stimulating.

I tend to lose interest without that element, it's true.

Is someone coming to meet you when you return to us? To help with the transformation?

It's getting dark so we'll be one more night out here. Might take care of it then, but I'm not a bad as I have been. No fangs.

Last time I talked to Alina I told her I was probably going to need her when I got back. But I'm not really... I'm kind of sexed out.

She'll want to be with you.

Even if you don't need sex, I think you need someone, Ianthe.

How long can I have her before it starts to bother you? Assuming she wants to stay.

As long as you need her to be with you. As long as she wants to stay.

I'm really glad she didn't come down here with us.

I understand that. Let's hope none of us ever need go down there again.

There's nothing to forgive. You and the others have saved us all. Whatever you need while you recover is the least we can do to express our gratitude.
